More windy, rainy weather headed to Whatcom County
The rain and wind from Monday, Nov. 16, is expected to be repeated Tuesday in Whatcom County.
Winds gusted up to 41 mph Monday, as recorded at Bellingham International Airport by late afternoon, with steady winds topping out at 28 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Tuesday the wind is expected to pick up, with sustained winds to 32 mph in the Bellingham area and gusts to 45 mph. Some areas along the Western Washington coast could have gusts of 65 mph, according to the NWS.
Winds that strong can snap tree limbs and take out power lines.
The Bellingham area was expected to get up to an inch of rain Monday. Another roughly half inch is possible Tuesday before the rain tapers off to showers at night.
The Nooksack River could flood in areas from all the rain because river levels have not receded to normal after the last round of rain. A flood watch is in effect until late Wednesday. Moderate flooding is expected in the Acme and Nugents Corner areas, according to the Northwest River Forecast Center. Some minor flooding also is possible in Ferndale.
The heavy rains also may increase the likelihood of landslides and debris flowing off steep slopes or shorelines, according to Whatcom County Public Works. Anyone who sees a landslide is asked to call 911.
More rain is in the forecast until Friday, when mostly sunny skies are expected.
