Coal terminal study a year off

Those who closely follow the Gateway Pacific Terminal coal export project might remember that a thorough environmental report started in February 2014 was supposed to take 13 months to complete. A project redesign and slow responses by the applicants SSA Marine and BNSF Railway have caused delays. Now the environmental impact statement is expected “late 2016,” according to Tyler Schroeder, the official overseeing Whatcom County’s review of the project.

Shop Fairhaven for charity

Nov. 12 is Fairhaven Gives Back day, when pariticpating businesses donate 10 percent of any sale to the nonprofit the shopper chooses. Since the event was launched in 2013, Fairhaven Gives Back has raised more than $3500 for local nonprofits. List of participating businesses, nonprofits and other details.

Vending machine 1, Thief 0

An industrious thief tried to use a drill to break into a vending machine at the Blaine Marina in late October, the Blaine Police log notes. The lock not only held, but it busted the would-be thief’s drill bit. The thief didn’t get any money, which he or she might need to replace that bit.
