Remember, remember

In England Nov. 5 is remembered as Guy Fawkes day, for one of the participants in a plot to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate King James I in 1605. (It failed.) Bellingham residents may remember it better as the day Whatcom Middle School caught fire. The 2009 blaze heavily damaged the school, but no one was hurt. It was rebuilt and restored to its original look, including the iconic “Waste Not Thy Hour” above the front door.

Winter wondering

What kind of weather will El Nino bring to the Pacific Northwest this winter? Will we get enough snow to make skiers and snowboarders going to Mt. Baker Ski Area happy? Will there be enough precipitation to get Washington state out of a drought? Find out at a glance via a Time graphic using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Water main break at Ferndale High

A water main that provides water to the cafeteria building in Ferndale High School broke Wednesday night, Nov. 4, according to the district. Crews were making repairs last night and classes were on schedule today.

Mayor decided by draw of cards

While the Ferndale mayor’s race is still going the traditional route of counting ballots, a tie in a Florida town led to an old-fashioned draw of cards to decide who would become mayor of Bradenton Beach.
