What’s happening in Whatcom County for Oct. 23

Bike box tour

Join city of Bellingham and Whatcom Council of Governments staff on a guided tour of the city's new bikeways from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. Learn about bicycle boulevards, bike boxes, and other new features, and discover low-stress bike routes to get across Interstate 5 and travel through neighborhoods on an easy 5 1/2-mile loop. Meet at Bellingham High School, 2020 Cornwall Ave., at the main entrance off Ohio Street at 1 p.m. Children under 5 years old must be on their parent or guardian's bike (bike seat, trailer or tag-along bike). Larrabee turns 100

Larrabee State Park was established Oct. 23, 1915, as little more than a picnic site with a nice beach on Samish Bay, according to History.org. It became Washington’s first state park and has grown to 2,683 acres south of Bellingham. Check out more of its history.

Bridge work delays

If you’re headed to or through Skagit County over the next few days, the state Department of Transportation says to expect delays on these bridges over the Skagit River:

▪  On the Memorial Highway (State Route 536), one lane closed 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25.

▪  Highway 9 south of Sedro-Woolley, single lane closed 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 26-29.

Or how about watermelon flavor? Pink Lemonade anyone? Kellogg’s has unveiled five new flavors to roll into stores starting in December through spring. They likely will be available for a limited time. Unless they are a huge hit, of course.
