Star Wars trailer, tickets drop Monday

A new trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will debut during the Monday Night Football game on ESPN on Oct. 19. Once the trailer airs at halftime, tickets go on sale, though you can’t see the movie until Dec. 18. Of course, if you don’t order advance tickets, you’ll probably be waiting until sometime in 2016 to see director J.J. Abrams’ take in the series’ seventh film.

Rep. Morris to hold “Community Coffee” meeting with constituents

Rep. Jeff Morris, D-Mount Vernon, will hold an open meeting for constituents to ask questions and give their feedback about what is happening in Northwest Washington and Olympia from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at The Woods Coffee, 1135 Railroad Ave. in Bellingham. RSVP at 360-786-7970.

The International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) and Western Washington University’s Compass 2 Campus Program will host “An Evening of Light” from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Western Performing Arts Center.

The free event open to everyone features Melissa Rice, a Western professor and a science team member of the NASA Mars Curiosity Rover vehicle, discussing how light is used to search for life and to study the ancient history of Mars. The event will be attended by other professionals in STEM fields, and will include a laser show and free souvenirs.

Lummi group seeking money for canoe trip

A group of canoe paddlers from Lummi Nation is raising money to participate in a Canoes 2 Paris demonstration at the United Nations Climate Negotiations in Paris in December.

The group plans to barge a 38-foot traveling canoe to Paris to paddle on the Rhine River with other indigenous canoes from the Amazon, Norway, the Great Lakes area, and kayaktivists from all over Europe during the UN climate meeting.

The Lummi group has set up a gofundme page to raise money for the trip, scheduled for Dec. 5-18.
