What’s closed in Whatcom County for Oct. 12 holiday

City and county offices, schools, most retail stores and services will be operating Monday, Oct. 12, while the post office and most banks will close for Columbus Day. The city of Bellingham now recognizes the day as Coast Salish Day and not Columbus Day, which is the federally recognized holiday. Some places also recognize it as Indigenous Peoples Day.

Those planning to travel should expect a lot of closures in Canada in observance of that country’s thanksgiving holiday Monday.

Here is a list of local services and their status Monday:

GOVERNMENT

City of Bellingham and Whatcom County government offices: Open.

Bellingham parking meters: Enforced.

Bellingham library branches: Open.

Whatcom County library branches and bookmobile: Closed for a day of staff training. Will reopen Tuesday for regular hours.

Public schools, colleges and universities: Open.

Postal service: No delivery Monday, offices closed.

SERVICES

Banks: Most branches are closed; call ahead to check.

Garbage: SSC and Nooksack Valley Disposal will pick up on regular schedule, but trucks might arrive early so put out trash and recycling earlier than usual.

Whatcom Transportation Authority: Buses on regular schedule.

The Bellingham Herald: Offices open, regular newspaper delivery.

Sumas Medical Clinic: Closed.

RETAIL/ENTERTAINMENT

Bellis Fair: Open regular hours. Some anchor stores may have extra sale hours.

Grocery stores: Open, including Trader Joe’s, Community Food Co-op and Everybody’s Store.

Movie theaters: Open.
