What’s happening in Whatcom on Aug. 24
Rough morning: It looked scary but no one was hurt when a Honda and a Subaru collided at Holly and Commercial streets Monday morning.
Road work: Expect delays and detours in Sudden Valley, downtown Bellingham and on H Street Road during a heavy week of road work.
Zombie ’ham: For those who were paying attention, that was former Bellingham resident Katie Huffman hurrying down the stairs of a high school in L.A. in the pilot of AMC’s spinoff, “Fear the Walking Dead.” You can find her at about 50 minutes 36 seconds into the show, which premiered Sunday, Aug. 23, and is online at AMC.com.
Asbestos risk: The drought has increased the already elevated risk of asbestos exposure at Swift Creek and the Sumas River, according to the Whatcom Conservation District. Low water levels have exposed more sediment, which contains natural asbestos from a landslide on Sumas Mountain.
Car wash danger: The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries has issued a warning about a car wash chemical that can cause serious burns to workers. Here’s a link with the details.
