Bellingham rental prices drop, as some nearby cities cost $750 less than others
Our recent rental price survey shows average home rental prices decreasing in Bellingham compared to last month, as other cities across Whatcom County and Washington’s average increased.
Bellingham
The average price for a Bellingham rental unit including all bedrooms and all property types was $2,250 on June 1, according to data from Zillow. That’s a decrease of $35 compared to May’s average price, but an increase of $150 compared to June 2025.
“The price range for all bedrooms and all property types is $700 to $6,000,” according to Zillow’s June data. Bellingham’s average rental price in June is 13% higher than the national average, according to Zillow.
Whatcom County
Zillow rent price data can also be compared by city. Here are Whatcom County’s average rent prices on June 1:
- Deming: Stayed the same as last month at $1,875
- Blaine: Increased to $2,395
- Bellingham: Decreased to $2,250
- Ferndale: Decreased to $1,995
- Point Roberts: Decreased to $1,700
- Everson: Decreased to $1,875
- Birch Bay: Stayed the same as last month at $2,000
- Sumas: Stayed the same as last month at $1,638
- Lynden: Increased to $1,931
Renting in the most the county’s most affordable city, Sumas, could save you over $750 per month compared to the most expensive city, Blaine.
Compared to last month, prices decreased in four cities, increased in two and remained steady in three.
Washington
Zillow also tracks and compares rental prices by state. The average price for rentals of all bedrooms and all property types across Washington was $2,000 on June 1, according to data from Zillow. That’s $5 more than May’s average price, and a $67 decrease compared to June of last year.
The average rental prices vary between $1,417 per month for a studio apartment to $4,793 for a four-bedroom unit, according to Zillow’s May data. That’s a decrease from $1,400 per month for a studio apartment and $5,134 for a four-bedroom unit in May.
Washington’s average rental price is equal to the national average in June, while in May the state’s average was 0.25% lower than the national average.
According to Zillow, Washington’s average rent price is still less than some other states with a high cost of living. In June, California’s average rental price is $2,695, while Colorado is at $2,100, Massachusetts is at $3,213, New York is at $3,200, Hawaii is at $3,200 and New Jersey is at $2,400.
Compared to neighboring states, Washington’s average rental prices are more expensive. Oregon’s average is $1,700 and Idaho’s average is $1,723.
