A 70-year-old Deming man died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash Saturday along State Route 9 near Van Zandt, Wash.

The deceased driver was traveling north alone just after noon in a Kymco off-road vehicle and attempted a left turn, according to a Washington State Patrol incident report. At the same time, a 16-year-old female from Deming was driving south, also with no passenger, in a 2009 Kia Sportage.

The male driver crossed the southbound lane while attempting the turn into a residence and was struck by the Kia, according to WSP. The impact sent the off-road vehicle to the northbound shoulder, where it came to rest.

The male driver died at the scene. He was not wearing a Department of Transportation-compliant helmet. The report lists the cause of the crash as “failure to yield right of way.”

The female driver was injured in the crash and was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

The WSP report indicates drugs or alcohol were not a factor.
