Highway 20 was closed near Newhalem on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 19, because of a spreading wildfire sparked by lightning.
The highway was closed about 2 p.m. from two miles west of Newhalem to five miles east of town, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Smoke from what’s known as the Goodell Fire was limiting visibility on the highway.
Earlier Wednesday, the Upper and Lower Goodell group camps and Newhalem Creek Campground were closed because of the fire burning near Newhalem.

The lightning-caused fire is about 80 acres. It was detected Aug. 10.
The North Cascades National Park Visitor Center also has closed. The North Cascades Environmental Learning Center, Ross Lake Resort and the towns of Diablo, Winthrop and Twisp have been evacuated.
More closures could occur as fire activity changes.
