‘Music to a lot of ears’: More parking spots coming to Bellingham waterfront
The Port of Bellingham is adding more than 100 parking spots to the downtown waterfront area.
The Port called the addition “music to a lot of ears” and said it’s part of an effort to expand accessibility to nearby businesses, waterfront events, the Portal Container Village and Waypoint Park.
The 109 new parking spots will be installed along Granary Avenue just north of the existing parking lot, according to a social media post from the Port.
“Anyone who’s circled (the parking lot) on a busy summer day or during an event knows it can fill up fast,” the post states. “This lot extension will help reduce that frustration while we work with our city and development partners to create a parking strategy that serves the area as it transitions from temporary to permanent development over the long term.”
The new lot is expected to include ADA parking and infrastructure, as well as temporary access points to the future skate park that is in planning, according to the post.
Events are not expected to be negatively affected by these future spaces, the Port said in response to a comment on the post.
“We have been working closely with the event organizers to ensure this works in the best interests of the surrounding businesses and the popular events we see at the Downtown Waterfront,” the Port’s response said.
The Port’s post did not share an anticipated timeline for construction or estimated completion date.
