A 22-year-old man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of first-degree assault following a report of a driver pointing a gun at someone in a road rage incident.

The Blaine Police Department said officers were called to the 1000 block of Mitchell Avenue just before 5 p.m. The victim told police that a man had pointed a gun at them and was chasing them around the city in a vehicle.

The man was speeding, driving recklessly and cut the other driver off at one point, according to police.

Police initiated a “high-risk” traffic stop at the intersection of Third and H streets. Officers had prior knowledge of the suspect possessing a firearm and, after pulling him over, found a loaded pistol in his car.

The 22-year-old was taken into custody and booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault and reckless driving. He has yet to be formally charged.
