They’re back: Menace Brewing to host another Puppy Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday
Before the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots on Sunday, Feb. 8, the SeaPaws will take on the BarkHawks at Menace Brewing in the second annual Puppy Bowl.
Starting at noon, the dog-friendly pub at 2529 Meridian St. will host a miniature field, complete with yard lines, field goals and end zones for people to observe local, adoptable dogs.
The dogs are provided through Happy Tails, Happy Homes, a Whatcom County based nonprofit dedicated “to protecting and serving the well-being of animals and fostering positive relationships between people and animals,” according to their website.
“As dog owners, we at Menace Brewing feel these events are very important for families and our furry friends,” Ryan Flood, one of the owners of Menace Brewery. said in an email to The Bellingham Herald. “They bring the community together and provide homes for foster dogs that are desperately in need. And they are super fun!”
The featured players are pit bull terrier mixes that are a part of new program at Happy Tails, Happy Homes called Our Last Litter. The program — as described by Cassie Olson, the coordinator of this year’s Puppy Bowl — gives pregnant dogs a safe place to birth and raise their litter. Following birth, the program also pays to spay/neuter the mother and pups.
While you may not be able to take home any of the Puppy Bowl players on the event day, guests will have an opportunity to fill out adoption applications with Happy Tails, Happy Homes to adopt the players or one of 50 dogs in the organization’s care.
“These kinds of events matter because Menace Brewing loves to be a very integral part of the community, and they really like to support local nonprofits. It’s also really important to raise awareness about the need of the homeless puppies and dogs that we have in this community,” Menace Brewing representative Jennifer Stephen said.
Looking for something more mature?
If you’re looking for a new addition to your family, but a young puppy isn’t suitable for you, there is an event for older dogs just down the street.
Zeek’s Pizza at 2416 Meridian St. in Bellingham will have three to five adult dogs from Happy Tails, Happy Homes for the public to meet, according to Olson.
“There’s a bigger number of [dogs who need homes] than people realize, and so we feel like it’s really important to help these puppies and dogs find their forever homes.”
