A Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office patrol car was involved in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon that sent both the deputy and the driver of the second vehicle to the hospital.

The crash occurred around 4:01 p.m. Jan. 20, near the intersection of West Smith Road and Saratoga Lane, according to Lt. Claudia Murphy with the Bellingham Police Department (BPD).

The deputy, who has not been named by the sheriff’s office, is out of the hospital and resting at home, according to Deb Slater with WCSO. Slater said the deputy is preparing to return to work soon.

Police have not released the name, age or gender for the other driver, and an update on their condition was unavailable.

Bellingham Police Department traffic officers and crime scene investigators responded to the crash scene, and Murphy said BPD is the lead agency for the investigation.

Police are asking for any witnesses to the crash to contact them. BPD is also asking for any dash camera or home security footage that may have captured the collision. People can contact the BPD tip line at 360-778-8611 or submit information at www.cob.org/tips.
