WSP releases identity of person killed in I-5 crash near Ferndale
A Whatcom County woman died in a crash late Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 5 that involved three vehicles carrying a total of six people.
According to an incident report from Washington State Patrol, Eduardo Nievesaponte, 27, of Blaine was traveling north in a 2003 Silverado pickup and crossed the median into the southbound lanes, where the vehicle collided with a 2023 Tesla Model 3.
The driver of the Tesla, Momina Khan, 22, of Blaine, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to WSP.
Nievesaponte is listed as “not injured” on the WSP report but was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, according to the release. A passenger in the Tesla also was injured and was taken to St. Joseph.
After the initial collision, the Silverado was struck by a third vehicle, a 2024 Hyundai Tucson. None of the three occupants in the third vehicle were seriously injured. All of them are from Ferndale, according to WSP.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation, although drugs and alcohol were not involved, according to the release. Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt at the time.
The southbound lane of I-5 was completely blocked from about 3:50 p.m. until around 9:15 p.m.
