Bellingham’s Little Squalicum Pier reopens after December storm damage

Little Squalicum Pier, a popular attraction for its views of Bellingham cityscape and the San Juan Islands, opened Friday, just in time for a period of sunny skies that’s slated to stretch into next week.

A post at the Parks and Recreation Department’s page on Facebook said the pier and connecting trail were damaged Dec. 10 in the series of storms that swept Whatcom County with strong wind, heavy rain and punishing waves

Little Squalicum Pier opened in April 2025 after several months of preparation to convert the former shipping pier into a 1,200-foot walking and bike path.

The former Lehigh Pier was built in 1912 by the Olympic Portland Cement Co. to carry railroad cars that delivered processed cement products to waiting barges. Operations ended in the late 1980s and the pier fell into disrepair, according to the city of Bellingham website and previous Bellingham Herald reporting.
