Contributions to this year’s Extend-A-Hand campaign topped $40K for local help

The Bellingham Herald partners with Unity Care NW and Opportunity Council each winter to conduct the Extend-A-Hand fundraising drive, now in its fifth decade.

Unity Care NW uses Extend-a-Hand funds for prescription costs, vaccinations and other health-related items, while Opportunity Council, which administers the fund, helps families avoid eviction.

Bellingham Herald readers have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of the campaign over the years. The need continues to be great as inflation and other increasing costs have hit these organizations’ clients especially hard. Through Thursday, Jan. 15, donors had contributed $41,050 to this year’s campaign.

Past donations have helped families like this:

A grandmother and her teenage granddaughter sank into the hotel armchairs, comforted by the warmth after the past few nights they had spent sleeping in their car. Extend-A-Hand was there for them, covering their hotel stay so the teen could focus on finishing her last semester of high school while Grandma searched for a more permanent home.

Graduation day arrived with joy and relief. Tassels were turned — despite the odds, the teen had earned her diploma and was ready to move on to college. Soon after, she got her college dorm assignment, and her Grandma got accepted for a cozy apartment nearby.

As they closed the hotel room door for the last time, the granddaughter leaned in for the kind of hug only a grandma can give — long, steady, and full of love — and they stepped into their next chapter.
