Two men — one from Bellingham, the other from Burlington — with serious injuries were flown via helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle early Thursday morning following a two-vehicle crash in Burlington.

A 27-year-old Bellingham man was ejected from a vehicle as a result of the collision. A passenger in the vehicle, a 33-year-old Sedro-Woolley woman, also was injured. She was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon for treatment, according to a news release from the Burlington Police Department.

The collision occurred around 12:35 a.m. Jan. 7 at the intersection of Burlington Boulevard and Fairhaven Avenue, according to the release.

A 24-year-old Mount Vernon man was driving the second vehicle. His passenger, a 20-year-old man from Burlington, was the second person flown to the Seattle hospital.

According to BPD, a Burlington police officer on patrol spotted the Mount Vernon man’s vehicle heading north at a high speed on Burlington Boulevard near Pease Road. The officer turned on his emergency lights to stop the vehicle, but quickly turned them off once the vehicle sped out of beyond his sight. The officer discovered the crash site while continuing to search for the speeding vehicle.

The 24-year-old driver was evaluated by paramedics and determined to have minor injuries. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, vehicular assault and eluding.

The driver was booked into the Skagit County Jail, according to the release.
