Birchwood Avenue fire in Bellingham likely caused by space heater
A garage in the 3000 block of Birchwood Avenue caught fire Sunday, Dec. 21.
No injuries were reported and no one was found inside the building, Bellingham Fire Capt. Dustin Michaelis told The Herald.
The fire was reported around 8:45 p.m., and crews arrived at 8:49 to find flames extending from the first floor of the building into the walls and second story. The likely cause of the fire was a space heater, Michaelis said.
Crews had the fire under control quickly, and cleared the scene around 10:45 p.m.
Home fires are more common in the winter months than any other season, with heating systems being a leading cause of fire deaths in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
