Fire Department responds to call from bowling alley in downtown Bellingham

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at a Bellingham bowling alley this week, but no injuries or damage to the building was reported.

Employees of 20th Century Bowl on State Street immediately called the fire department and evacuated the building when they noticed smoke coming from the basement, Bellingham Fire Capt. Dustin Michaelis told The Herald.

Fire crews arrived around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11 and found a pile of burning rags on top of a dryer, according to Michaelis. It is unclear exactly how the fire started. Michaelis said the rags could have been oily, and oily rags can spontaneously combust.

Firefighters quickly doused the fire, then stayed longer to help get the smoke out of the building.

Employees were allowed to re-enter the building around 4:30 p.m., according to Michaelis, and the bowling alley was open again to public use later in the evening.
