BP pipeline leak spills undetermined amount of fuel near Everett

A leak from a pipeline carrying jet fuel from the British Petroleum (BP) at Cherry Point in Whatcom County to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport spilled an unknown amount of fuel in an agricultural area over the weekend.

The leak was reported in the early afternoon of Saturday, Nov. 11 several miles south of Everett, according to Jasmin Adams, acting communications manager with the Washington State Department of Ecology.

The Olympic Pipeline consists of two fuel pipes, one that is 20 inches and one that is 16 inches. The leak was determined to be in the 20-inch pipe, according to a news release from BP Media Relations Manager Cesar Rodriguez.

The second pipeline continues to operate and is still delivering fuel to the airport, with no reported supply shortages, Adams told The Herald.

The cause and the amount of fuel leaked is still being determined, and crews are on site working to contain and clean up the spill. Adams said the current goal is to contain the spill to the impacted area, which involves using a vacuum truck and absorbent materials.

The Olympic Pipeline is a 400-mile pipeline system that runs from Cherry Point in Whatcom County to Portland. It transports refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel to terminal sites in Seattle, SeaTac, Tacoma, Portland and Vancouver, Washington.

Adams said there is no current estimate for when the leak will be repaired, and excavation work is planned to begin Tuesday, Nov. 18.
