When is opening day at Mount Baker Ski Area? The snow is calling the shots
The only thing stopping the Mount Baker Ski Area from opening is a lack of snow.
All ground operations are ready to go and staff are on standby. Unfortunately, there is no estimated opening date due to poor weather conditions, according to Mount Baker Ski Area General Manager Mike Trowbridge.
In 2024, the ski area was able to open by Nov. 20. Unless there is a major shift in the predicted weather, it does not look like the mountain will be open by that time this year, Trowbridge said.
How much snow is needed?
“This is like my 32nd or 33rd season at the mountain. Realistically, with these November snowfalls, it takes us about three days, four days, to get four feet of snow on the ground and go from zero to hero,” Trowbridge told The Bellingham Herald.
Despite above-average snowfall in October, a mix of high and low temperatures has made it tough to predict an opening day, according to Mount Baker Ski Area Marketing Director Amy Trowbridge.
Ski area operators require between 20 and 40 inches of snow base at Heather Meadows in order to consider opening, according to Mount Baker’s website. Because the ski area relies entirely on natural snowfall, there is nothing to do but wait.
Changes at the ski area
An addition to the ski area this year will be a new building near the White Salmon Base Area. The building is closed to the public, but it will be providing electricity to many chair lifts and the Raven Hut Lodge, according to Amy Trowbridge.
Chair lifts four through seven have been converted from diesel power to electric over the last handful of years, Amy Trowbridge said.
“Our main focus for the last couple of years has been the electrification of our chair lifts. We worked this summer on a new building at our White Salmon Base Area that will house the new generators and systems to electrify the White Salmon side of the ski area,” Amy Trowbridge said.
Ticket prices have also gone up this year, but only for the weekends.
“Peak” tickets for Friday-Sunday and holidays now run $104.44 for an adult. The weekday tickets, or “off-peak,” cost about the same as last year, at about $94.27 for an adult.
