One person was seriously injured in a traffic crash Oct. 31 that involved a downed tree, according to South Whatcom Fire Authority Chief Mithcell Nolze.

Fire crews were notified about the crash around 12:40 a.m. through an automated notification of an incident near Lake Whatcom Boulevard and Southern Court, Nolze said.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was injured enough that an airlift was requested, though weather conditions prevented it, Nolze told The Herald.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office leading the investigation, Nolze said.

Nolze said the driver was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center. No update on the driver’s status was available.
