Nooksack Valley students get a glimpse of potential futures with UW Medical trip
Students from Nooksack Valley High School recently visited the University of Washington as part of a program for students to explore real-world careers.
Six students, all members of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), visited the university Oct. 23, Technology Director Owen Craig said in an email.
The trip was part of the REEL Dreams project, which encourages students to explore real-world careers and to learn about the people behind the profession.
“Our day started at UW Medicine’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where we were welcomed by Dr. Taylor Sawyer (division head and chair of neonatology); his executive assistant, Katrina James; and Dr. Cyril Engmann (clinical professor of pediatrics and Global Health),” Craig said. “They gave us an incredible behind-the-scenes look at the NICU and shared honest, inspiring stories about their journeys in medicine, what drew them to their work, what keeps them motivated, and how compassion and leadership are important in health care.”
Craig said that after the tour of the hospital, the FBLA chapter walked around the campus, talking to university students about why they chose the profession they did and the advice they would give future applicants.
This was the second REEL Dreams field trip of the year for the Nooksack School District. A group also visited PAX WEST for a four-day field trip between Aug. 29 and Sept 1.
