The Perry Fire in eastern Whatcom County has been 61% contained and was most recently reported at 1,772 acres Sept. 29 at InciWeb, an interagency all-risk incident information management system.

The fire reportedly was caused by a lightning strike Aug. 27 and is located west of Ross Lake in the Little Beaver drainage in the North Cascades National Park Service Complex.

Officials estimate the fire will be fully contained by Nov. 15, according to InciWeb.

Little Beaver Trail from Ross Lake to Stillwell Camp is closed. Cross-country zone access from trails is also prohibited.

Silver Creek boat-in, Little Beaver boat-in, Little Beaver Group, Perry Creek and Stillwell are all closed due to the fire, according to InciWeb.

Burn ban lifted

The National Park Service has lifted a burn ban that was in effect on all land within the North Cascades National Park Service Complex, including campgrounds in Stehekin, along State Route 20 and the Ross Lake area, according to a Sept. 29 agency news release.

Campfires are allowed in campsites, although campers are instructed to keep the campfires small to decrease the likelihood of them spreading into wildfires. Campfires are required to be fully extinguished, which means it is cool to the touch.

“If it is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave,” according to the NPS release.
