Wildfire forces closures at several Ross Lake recreation areas
Trails and camps in the Little Beaver area of Ross Lake in eastern Whatcom County are closed due to nearby wildfire activity.
Little Beaver Trail is closed from Ross Lake to Stillwell Camp. Cross-country Zone access from closed trails is prohibited. Camp closures include:
- Little Beaver boat-in
- Little Beaver Group
- Perry Creek
- Stillwell
Additional closures are possible as more information becomes available, according to a news release from the North Cascades National Park Service Complex. Visitors can check the National Park Services Fire Closures page for updated information on trail and campground closures.
The closest wildfire, the Perry Fire, grew 50 acres the first 24 hours, and then to 85 in 72 hours, according to the Watch Duty app. The fire was first reported at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Fire officials say the Perry Fire was likely caused by lightning strikes.
Two other wildfires are burning in Whatcom County: the Thunder Fire, which was burning about 1.5 acres at 4:43 p.m. Aug. 28; and the Big Beaver Fire, which is reported at a quarter acre, according to the release.
