Autumn in August? Whatcom County u-pick farm ready for harvest season

Although its still August, autumn is right around the corner, and one of Whatcom County’s best spots for all things fall will kick off the seasonal celebration Saturday, Aug. 30.

Bellewood, a Lynden farm and distillery that is open year-round, is beginning its fall season this weekend, with activities including apple picking, seasonal treats and distillery tastings.

“Taste the difference of picking your farm-fresh apples, and show your kids where food comes from,” farm managers said in an email announcing the opening. “Tractor train rides go out to the orchard, and our corn maze is free for the community. Beat the weekend crowds and come during the weekdays. On the weekends, grab a dozen of our cider donuts or a tasty breakfast or lunch. We’ll see you on the farm this harvest.”

The farm’s apple orchard features 22 varieties to pick, as well as homemade apple cider, apple butter, apple chips and of course, apple pie, ready to take home from the farm’s store.

The farm’s cafe, Ten Mile Cafe, also will be open for visitors, and is offering free coffee for customers during August.

“Chef Jimmy creates the most delicious food in Whatcom County. Check out our lunch menu, and during August, if you mention the word ‘Honeycrisp,’ you can get a free Woods drip coffee with your food or bakery order,” the email states.

The cafe serves breakfast and lunch, including an “apple hog panini,” pulled-pork sandwich, chicken apple curry soup, salads, burgers, fish and chips, mac and cheese, pie, pastries and more.

Those age 21 and older also can visit the farm’s distillery, sample some homemade whiskeys, gins, and spirits, and take a bottle home.
