Repairs to the steps leading to the beach at Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve were made this week and shoreline access was opened Friday afternoon.

Bennett Knox, director of the Whatcom County Parks and Recreation Department, told The Bellingham Herald that the project was prioritized after the beach closed last week.

“There will be some minor follow-up items, but our priority is getting it back open for use,” Knox said in an email.

Beach access was closed last week when rotted wood on the stairs caused a hazard, according to previous Bellingham Herald reporting.

Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve is a 54-acre park that features a three-quarter-mile trail through forest to the rocky and pebbly beach, and offers a sweeping view of the San Juan Islands across the Salish Sea.
