Two women were injured Wednesday morning in Larrabee State Park just south of Bellingham after a tree fell and trapped them underneath.

Authorities received a 911 call at 8:29 a.m. for two women who needed to be rescued from under a tree that had fallen across the Fragrance Lake Trail.

The first responders arrived around 8:44 a.m., according to Fire Chief Mitchell Nolze with the South Whatcom Fire Authority.

Multiple units responded to the call, including Washington State Park rangers and staff who assisted with cutting the tree.

One woman was freed from under the tree by park staff before firefighters arrived.

Bellingham firefighters assisted the South Whatcom Fire Authority in extracting the women and providing care, Nolze told The Herald.

The women were taken to St. Joseph Medical Center for medical care. No information regarding their condition was immediately available.

Nolze said the tree appeared to fall as a result of “natural conditions,” although he said an exact cause was not immediately determined.

He said Wednesday’s rain, following a period of dry conditions, may have resulted in the tree falling.

The Fragrance Lake Trail is a 4-mile out-and-back forested trail that begins on Chuckanut Drive.
