Multiple law enforcement agencies are participating in a training drill this week at Vista Middle School in Ferndale focused on active shooters and mass casualty incidents.

The three-hour training starts at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, with some time for setup earlier, according to Kris Newberry, executive assistant to the Ferndale School District superintendent.

The school was chosen because it had a specific layout law enforcement was looking for, she said.

The agencies involved are the U.S. Border Patrol, Whatcom County Fire District 7 and the Ferndale Police Department, according to Megan Juenemann with the city of Ferndale.

Border Patrol is participating in the training as they are a potential early responder in an emergency situation, Juenemann said.

“This joint training provides an important opportunity for inter-agency collaboration, allowing each organization to better understand one another’s capabilities and to become familiar with the layout and operational dynamics of the environment in which they may be required to respond,” Juenemann said.
