Authorities used a police K-9 animal to arrest a man who allegedly attempted to flee in a vehicle from three different law enforcement agencies in Whatcom County.

The suspect, Brian M. Stone, 36 was first spotted by a Western Washington University police officer around 12:40 a.m. July 5, making an improper turn while driving a silver Honda without a rear license plate, according to Lt. Claudia Murphy with the Bellingham Police Department.

When the officer stopped the vehicle, Stone allegedly got out of his vehicle in the middle of the roadway to yell at the officer and threw a bottle at him, according to Murphy.

Stone got back into his car and drove away from the traffic stop. He then ran a stop sign at Fielding Avenue and headed to Samish Way at a high rate of speed, Murphy said.

The WWU officer stopped pursuing the man after losing sight of the vehicle.

Bellingham Police Department officers spotted the vehicle again just after 1 a.m. at 32nd Street and Donovan Avenue but did not engage in a pursuit, Murphy said.

The vehicle was seen a short time later by another BPD officer near Samish Way and Wilkin Street. Stone of the vehicle was reportedly having trouble staying in his lane and passed the officer at a high rate of speed but the officer opted not to pursue.

A pursuit did occur a few minutes later when a deputy with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office spotted the vehicle heading northbound on Yew Street. The vehicle was over the center line and driving fast, according to Deb Slater with WCSO.

The deputy watched Stone’s vehicle pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone, going about 55-65 mph in a 35 mph zone.

A BPD officer set up a spike strip at Yew Street Road and Old Lakeway Drive.

Stone drove over the strip, which deflated two tires. Stone then stopped, got out of the vehicle and started yelling at officers, Murphy said.

Stone took up a “fighting stance” when officers tried to arrest him, so a police K-9 was used to take the man into custody, according to Slater.

Stone was arrested, and has been charged with on suspicion of attempting to elude police vehicles, driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
