Authorities are investigating skeletal human remains found by a resident in Bellingham. The body was discovered in the bushes off of southbound Interstate 5 on Tuesday, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding.

The body appears to be male, though precise identification of the remains will take time, Whatcom County Medical Examiner Dr. Aldo Fusaro told The Herald. It is also unclear how long the individual has been deceased due to the body’s state of decay.

The remains have been sent to forensic anthropologists with the state of Washington for examination, Fusaro said.

WSP responded to the call of a body found around 12:30 p.m. June 17. WSP provided no additional information as the investigation remains active.
