Lane closures expected on Lakeway Drive for work on underground pipe
Construction to replace a broken pipe could cause traffic delays for several weeks on Lakeway Drive just east of the Bellingham city limits.
Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District announced the project Monday on its social media.
Lane closures are possible between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday until the end of June, the district said.
“While one lane will be closed intermittently, it is expected that one lane in each direction should be available with a revised traffic pattern. Traffic control is at the discretion of the contractor, and they may elect to reduce the road to a single lane with flaggers as needed. Every effort will be made to minimize traffic impacts, however, residents who commute on Lakeway Drive may experience some delays during this project,” the district said.
Lakeway Drive is one of Bellingham’s busiest streets. It carries more than 15,000 cars and trucks daily at that location, according to a 2023 traffic count.
The timing and duration of the work are subject to change, the district said.
Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer services the communities of Geneva, Sudden Valley and residents of the north shore of Lake Whatcom.
