Train engineers told the police they immediately hit the emergency brakes when they saw a person near the tracks but the train could not be stopped before it struck the man, Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy told The Herald.

Murphy said authorities had yet to determine why the man was near the train tracks.
