Injured Seattle hiker rescued from Mount Baker

A hiker was rescued by a Navy helicopter after he fell off a small cliff on Mount Baker Saturday, Aug. 8, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

Jasper Yao, 20, of Seattle fell off an approximately 30-foot cliff on Mount Baker on Saturday, the sheriff’s office said. Someone called 911 around 4:40 p.m. and reported that Yao was at the top of Heliotrope Ridge with a head injury and possibly a broken leg.

Search and rescue volunteers and a Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office helicopter tried helping Yao, who was at an elevation of about 5,500 feet, but they were unable to reach him due to strong winds. The Whidbey Island Naval Air Station responded with another helicopter and rescued Yao at around 8:30 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

Yao was taken to St. Joseph hospital Saturday.
