Bellingham’s Procession of the Species parade returns after pandemic hiatus

A family favorite parade, allowing young and old alike to dress in animal costumes, returns to downtown Bellingham this weekend for the first time since 2019.

Procession of the Species celebrates Earth Day and the wonders of the natural world with a parade starting at 2 p.m. Saturday from Lee Memorial Lawn behind the Bellingham Public Library and ending at Maritime Heritage Park, where a festival lasts until 5 p.m. There will be chalk art spaces, live entertainment, art and wildlife education activities.

Anyone who wants to walk the half-mile route can dress like a favorite creature and check in starting at 1:30 p.m. at a table behind the library (1 p.m. for those with a float).

For those who want to watch the parade, it leaves the library south lawn and heads south on Grand Avenue, turns west on Flora Street, south on Prospect Street, west on Champion Street to Holly Street, then downhill on Holly Street to Maritime Heritage Park.
