Whatcom home sales jump 22 percent in July

Whatcom County continued its string of strong real estate sales last month, hovering near a nine-year high.

Local real estate agents sold 372 homes and condominiums in July, a 22 percent increase compared to a year earlier, according to data from the Northwest Multiple Listing Service. The highest monthly total in the past nine years was 398, set in August 2007.

The July sales total follows up a busy May and June in which 325 and 378 homes and condos sold. This string of strong sales has led to a dip in available homes: Whatcom County has 3.5 months of inventory, according to the data. Typically six months’ inventory is considered a balanced market.

The median price for those homes sold last month was $277,882, up 4.9 percent compared to July 2014.

Across the 23 Washington counties the NWMLS serves, 9,424 homes sold in July, a 19.6 percent increase compared to a year earlier. Skagit County recorded 193 sales, a 22.2 percent increase.
