Park update: Play structures ready as first phase of Northern Lights work is complete
Bellingham’s newest park will be different in several ways, including its innovative play features and its long and narrow location in a courtyard between rows of townhomes.
At just shy of 2 acres, North Lights Park is being built in two phases as construction of the development progresses north of Costco.
The park’s first phase opens with a public ceremony at 4 p.m. Wednesday at 1350 Talus Way in the Aurora Court development.
“The play equipment was made based on recommendations from the developer, along with feedback from the public and members of the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board,” said Laine Potter, the Parks and Recreation Department’s parks development manager. “The second park will of a similar size and will have complementary play equipment so that all ages and users are served between the two parks.”
Potter told The Herald in an email that the cost to develop the park was $719,000. The developer paid for the park and received a fee credit, she said.
Northern Lights Park will have two play structures, including rocks for climbing, a net for scrambling and a bamboo jungle.
TrekFit, a maker of playground structures, said it is aimed at all ages.
“Designed to encourage an active lifestyle, they combine the best of urban art with an array of physical challenges. Ideal for teens, they are created to offer a variety of skill levels, making for a course that challenges everyone according to their own ability. These arresting pieces enhance the public space while bringing all segments of the community together in the spirit of activity and fun,” TrekFit said at its website.
