A car crash Thursday caused significant damage to the Fraser Street pedestrian bridge in Bellingham.

A driver in a black sedan drove under the bridge, destroying a section of the walkway just east of Puget Street. No injuries were reported in the crash, according to a social media post made by the Bellingham Police Department.

According to the post, the crash happened because the “driver did not take the road conditions into consideration today while driving and lost control of their car.” The road was covered in snow at the time.

“The affected section of the walkway is currently closed,” city of Bellingham Communications and Outreach Manager Riley Grant told The Herald in an email. “We understand this is an important pedestrian route, and we are working diligently to restore access as quickly as possible. Our immediate priority is to identify a short-term solution, such as a temporary detour or alternative pedestrian route, to allow people to safely travel through the area while we develop a longer-term repair plan. We are assessing the feasibility of these temporary options now. A complete and permanent repair of the walkway will take some time as we work through engineering, permitting and resource allocation.”
