A pedestrian was hit by a train Thursday morning in Bellingham.

The incident occurred around 1:38 a.m. near the intersection of Cornwall Avenue and Wharf Street.

Due to thick fog, the train was moving slowly through Bellingham at around 25 mph. The pedestrian, an adult male, was apparently struck by the handrail/ladder on the engine and was flung clear of the tracks into a ditch, according to Megan Peters with the Bellingham Police Department.

The train conductor called 911 to report the incident, and reported sounding the horn to warn the man who was on the tracks, Peters said.

Police found the man conscious and alert, and aid was provided by the Bellingham Fire Department before he was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center.
