Does your nonprofit organization need a van? WTA taking applications for surplus giveaway
Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) has opened applications for its 2024 Community Van Grant Program. WTA will award surplus used vans to nonprofit and government organizations.
Applicants are scored on their ability to meet transportation needs not currently met by the WTA and their ability to document the results.
Up to 11 vans capable of transporting 12 to 15 passengers will be given away. Only one vehicle is awarded per organization, although organizations can reapply during subsequent cycles. The vans are for qualifying organizations based in Whatcom County — the trips must start or end in Whatcom County.
Applicants must provide adequate proof of insurance coverage. Winners will take the vehicle’s title and submit a regular performance report for the first year of ownership. Following the initial reporting requirements, WTA will have no further involvement.
Applications are available online at www.ridewta.com. The application deadline is 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23. Contact Malcolm Duncan-Graves at vanpool@ridewta.com or 360-788-9312 for additional information.
“This program allows us to collaborate with nonprofits to fill crucial transportation gaps, ensuring better access and service for Whatcom County residents,” Ali Hawkinson, Ferndale City Council member and WTA board president, said in a press release sent to The Bellingham Herald.
