Wet and windy weather has delayed construction on the roundabout at Smith and Hannegan roads, forcing crews to work this weekend.

Normal weekday construction hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., but work is scheduled for all days Saturday.

“This week, expect to see traffic control workers managing the entire intersection. Flaggers will be on-site to direct traffic as necessary. Please follow their directions, drive slowly, and provide all workers with space. Again, please expect delays during work hours and use alternate routes,” the Whatcom County Public Works Department said in an email.

Several crashes have been reported in the area since roundabout construction started last week. The speed limit was reduced to 40 mph until work is complete.

“This is an important safety measure. As construction work continues, the roadway may have narrow and/or shifted lanes, grooved pavement, bumps, and other factors requiring a speed reduction. Whatcom County sheriff’s deputies may be present to assist with enforcement,” Public Works said.

A 25-day full closure of the intersection is planned after Independence Day, ending before the Northwest Washington Fair starts Aug. 8.
