Bellingham procession honors firefighter who died in snowboarding accident

Fire service colleagues on Monday escorted the body of an off-duty Ferndale firefighter who died in a snowboarding accident last week, from a Bellingham funeral home to a funeral home in Mount Vernon.

Capt. John DeVenere, 63, of Sedro-Woolley, fell into a tree well early Friday afternoon near Mount Shuksan. He died of accidental snow immersion, the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office told The Bellingham Herald.

Bellingham police led a procession of fire apparatus, mourners and others on Lakeway Drive from Woburn Street to Interstate 5. Services for DeVenere, who worked for Whatcom County Fire District 7, will be next week in Bellingham. Details regarding services were yet to be determined as of Tuesday.
