The Nooksack Indian Tribe celebrated the completion of three newly built tiny homes for tribal community members Tuesday.

Members of the Tribal Council, Nooksack elders, youth, tribal members, community members and new residents gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb. 20.

“I would like to thank all those that have had a helping hand in making this project where it is today. We’re finally able to have some of our community move in,” Nooksack Chairwoman RoseMary LaClair said during the ceremony.

The Nooksack Sulkanum Singers also joined in a Prayer Song at the ribbon-cutting ceremony to bless the three new tiny homes.

The three units are located on Edith Drive in Deming. They each include a full kitchen, living area, bathroom and open-concept bedroom area. There are six parking spaces in front of the three tiny homes.

The homes are serving households of one to two people who have been on the Nooksack Tribal housing applicant list.

“The Nooksack Indian Tribe has had more than 200 enrolled Nooksack Tribal Members on the housing wait list for years. Housing is a critical need and important for our community,” Nooksack Indian Tribe communications representative Abby Yates wrote in an email to The Herald.

Construction on the tiny homes began in the spring of 2022 and was just recently completed.

The Nooksack Tribe has multiple other housing construction projects ongoing, including three two-bedroom units and one four-bedroom unit. The three two-bedroom units will be contained in a triplex on one lot. The four-bedroom unit will be located on a separate lot. Both will be built with yard space on First Street on the Nooksack Reservation.
