Woman dies in early-morning Lummi Nation house fire
A woman died in a devastating structure fire early Monday morning in Bellingham.
Firefighters responded to a call at 2:12 a.m. Monday morning to find a mobile home on fire in the 2500 block of Scott Road in Lummi Nation. When crews arrived the fire was still too intense for them to enter the home, and they turned focus to fighting the fire. The woman, whom authorities said was in her 70s, was found deceased when crews were finally able to search the residence.
A survivor of the fire told firefighters he was awakened in the night to what sounded like a tornado. When he opened his door, he was met with smoke and fire. He had to close the door and leave the residence through a window. The man circled back around to the front and tried to get in that way in an attempt to save the woman he knew was in the house, but the intensity of the fire prevented him from entering the building, according to Capt. Dustin Michaelis with the Bellingham Fire Department.
The mobile home was completely destroyed by the fire. Michaelis said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Authorities have yet to release the woman’s name.
