Multiple-vehicle collision on I-5 has traffic backed up Monday evening in Bellingham

Southbound I-5 at Sunset Drive is fully closed following a multi-vehicle collision involving a semitruck. The collision was announced in a WSDOT North social media post at 4:46 p.m. The collision was cleared by WSDOT around 7:22 p.m. and roads were reopened.

Seven vehicles including the semitruck were involved in the collision, the number of injuries is currently unknown, although they were reported as minor, State Patrol Officer Kelsey Harding told The Bellingham Herald Monday night.

The cause of the collision is still be investigated, Harding told the Herald at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Southbound traffic was backed up from Ohio Street to Slater Road, according to The Washington State Department of Transportation interactive map.

Motorists were instructed to use alternate routes, according to a tweet from .

The reason for the long delay was the semitruck, which takes more time to tow and is generally a longer process, Harding said.

Medical aid, State Patrol, fire crews and tow trucks reported to the scene.
