While fire can be seen on Sumas Mountain, it is nothing to worry about, and there is no need to call 911.

This is a planned burn on private property, according to Will Rubin, communications manager with the state Department of Natural Resources.

Rubin said he is unsure what type of burn exactly is happening on the mountain, but everything has been permitted.

This type of burn needs to be done after the summer heat and a little bit of rain so it doesn’t easily burn out of control, DNR says.

Sumas Mountain is located in Whatcom County northeast of Bellingham in the Skagit Range. The mountain is popular with hikers.

(An earlier version of this story said the fire was a prescribed burn on public land coordinated by DNR.)
