Bellingham construction site catches fire for second time; cause is unknown
Fire broke out early Wednesday at Dewey Road and Sunset Drive; it was the second fire at that intersection, and the third on that street, in less than three years.
The fire was reported by an ambulance working another incident around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. Crew members saw smoke pouring out of a second-story window of a townhouse. The ambulance’s crew called for backup, which arrived shortly.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the fire department. It is unclear if this is linked to the other fire at this location. The first fire at this site was in July 2022 at Britton Road and Sunset Drive, less than a mile north, and the second in May 2023 in the same location as the Wednesday Fire. The cause of those fires has not been determined.
Fire crews discovered the blaze had not started on the second floor but in the garage. A pallet full of construction materials caught fire, and the smoke billowed up through the house and out the window. Exact damages to the structure are unknown, as most of the fire seemed to affect materials inside the structure and not the structure itself, Fire Capt. Dustin Michaelis said.
No injuries were reported at the fire Wednesday.
