Overnight fire damages multi-family apartments under construction in Bellingham

The Bellingham Herald

Fire heavily damaged an apartment complex under construction in the Barkley neighborhood, near the scene of a similar fire last year, the Bellingham Fire Department said Thursday.

No injuries were reported in the 1:27 a..m. blaze near the corner of Sunset Drive and Dewey Road, Fire Capt. Dustin Michaelis told The Bellingham Herald.

Flames were contained to the complex of at least eight apartments that were framed in the early stages of construction, and without electrical, plumbing or gas connections, Michaelis said.

Cause of the fire was under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available, he said. The fire has not been labeled suspicious.

A fire in late July heavily damaged an apartment complex under construction near Britton Road and Mount Baker Highway. Fire officials weren’t linking the two fires, but Michaelis said the earlier fire was still under investigation.

The fire was quickly put out within an hour, and the last firefighters left within about 90 minutes, Michaelis said.
