Interstate 5 roadwork could slow your southbound drive all summer. Here’s why

Pavement work on southbound Interstate 5 will cause overnight lane closures all summer from Nulle Road just south of Bellingham to the Chuckanut Drive exit near Bow.

Crews will fill ruts, potholes and cracks that made the road uneven and bumpy and in some cases replace entire concrete panels along the 12-mile stretch of freeway, the Washington State Department of Transportation said in a statement.

Work began Monday and will continue through September, WSDOT said.

“This work will extend the life of the highway and provide a smoother ride for travelers,” the press release read.

“To minimize traffic congestion during construction, most of this work will be completed during nighttime single-lane and ramp closures,” WSDOT said.

Closures are planned:

From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. weekdays.

From 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. weekends.

Ramp closure hours vary but typically are from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Detour routes will be posted when ramps are closed.
